From the Manufacturer Why Sanyo eneloop? Sanyo eneloop rechargeables can replace an entire kitchen drawer’s worth of dry cell batteries You already know the benefits of using conventional rechargeable batteries. But Sanyo eneloop batteries have advantages over other rechargeables that put them a step ahead. Sanyo eneloop batteries are an excellent choice for your rechargeables because : * They can be used right after purchase * They consistenly yield high performance * They have a long shelf life with no loss of energy * They can be used everywhere * They are environmental friendly Self-Discharge : Why Conventional Rechargeables Don’t Cut It Conventional rechargeable batteries have numerous advantages that make them great to use for your portable electronics. But they also come with certain disadvantages. After purchase, rechargeable batteries have to be charged before they can be used. And once charged, rechargeable batteries lose the stored energy rather fast. The charging takes quite long and rapid chargers are expensive. Not only that, but continuous charging or frequent charge to “top off” the lost energy (without complete discharge) can destroy the battery. All these negative attributes have one root-cause : self discharge. Self-discharge means that a charged battery slowly discharges itself without any equipment consuming any current. This is the reason for rechargeable batteries being sold in a discharged state. And this is the reason that keeping charged batteries for some time did not make any sense. When you needed them, the energy was gone. Sanyo eneloop batteries have an extremely low rate of self-discharge, which means they hold their stored energy for a very long time–charge your batteries once and put them in your kitchen drawer, and over a year from now you’ll still be able to use them right away, without needing to charge them again.

I bought these batteries to replace my stock of alkaline batteries for various purposes. The low self discharge makes that possible. Nearly all of my devices now have these batteries in them. They seem to perform just as advertised. They are a little expensive up front, but if they continue to work for years the cost is really a very small consideration. The charger that comes with these batteries is just a typical NiMH charger, any such charger will work. Also the shelf life of these batteries means that you don’t really need multiple chargers.

These batteries are an easy choice for nearly any device. Many reviewers, here and elsewhere, have attested to these batteries performance. I recommend these batteries highly as a general alkaline replacement and a standard rechargeable replacement for all but very specific devices.

After reading the instructions, I returned this charger without using it. The instructions state not to have any other equipment connected to any other USB ports while charging your batteries or your PC could be damaged or data lost. With my router and mouse disconnected, I can’t use my PC. The instructions also say that if the computer goes standby, the charging is interrupted.

If Sanyo had stated this in the description on Amazon’s site, I wouldn’t have bought it.

I am not denying the ‘greatness’ of this device, but I have yet to see it. Unfortunately, there is no manufacturing date on the unit, so I have no idea how old they were. They arrived charged. When I inserted the first discharged ones into the charger, per the instructions, the charger did not light. When I discharged the second set, I tried to charge all four, but again, there is no LED activity on the charger.

I called their customer service, and it seems like this is slightly routine for them. So I will update this review once I received the replacement products. Maybe the newer set will work as swimmingly as others have stated. For now, I will say this first pack of 4 lasted only 25% as long as standard duracell.

I have found the Eneloop to be far and away the best rechargeable batteries I’ve ever used.
